This program is designed to develop advanced knowledge and a range of research skills in the analysis of human factors and the development of safety management systems.

The program blends academic quality with industry relevance to apply the theories and principles of Human Factors in a range of contexts, including organisational development and sustainability, safety, design, and productivity. Core topics include law and corporate social responsibility, physiological and cognitive human factors, safety management systems, and managing risk.

An emerging field, Human Factors professionals assist industry and organisations to improve their safety and performance. Traditionally Human Factors was heavily focused on aviation, transport, and aged care but is expanding into all industries including oil and gas, chemical, engineering, manufacturing, and service industries. Human Factors is relevant to any situation requiring optimisation of human well-being and performance, and overall system performance.

The aim of this program is to develop professionals who have the ability to:
  • incorporate human factors into organisations to lead to competitive advantages in the marketplace 
  • recognise and systematically address common problems that contribute to human error
  • recognise and address the potential for human error in novel or unusual circumstances and situations
  • improve product quality and performance
  • improve human-machine-system interaction
Offering flexibility through interactive online course materials, this fully online program is taught by skilled and experienced academics and industry personnel who utilise the latest teaching methodologies to enable students to interact and engage with teaching staff and other students.

Students are able to undertake a Graduate Certificate in Organisational Safety and Human Factors as a pathway for progression to the Graduate Diploma level.

Career opportunities

As a graduate you will have the skills to practice as a human factors professional in areas such as risk management, task analysis, interface design, usability evaluation, and incident and accident investigation.
